Successful investment in fishing tourism

Daniel Hellström

In Malingsbo-Kloten, between Ludvika and Kopparberg, Daniel Hellström can draw the conclusion that his efforts have been well rewarded. Now he is planning on further investment in over-night accommodation and sideline activities.
All the goals for 2009 have been exceeded despite the recession, he says.

When Daniel Hellström heard that Sveaskog was interested in leasing out six lakes in the nature conservation area, Malingsbo-Kloten in Bergslagen, he didn't hesitate to apply. And since January 2009 he has been able to call himself a fishing entrepreneur.

"It's a dream come true," he says with a smile, "and it feels great."

With the pronounced ambition of taking good care of his customers, in addition, to making efforts to attract new groups of customers, he has met his goals easily.

"The financial crisis caused many companies to stay away, but with smaller groups of private guests, gangs of mates, stag dos, family meetings and such like, I have nevertheless managed to increase the number of visitors," says Daniel Hellström.

Made for fishing enjoyment

He invites his guests to fish in their own lake for a full day. Most methods of fishing are permitted. There are planked paths, toilets, refuse sorting facilities, fishing places and BBQ stands with firewood on the shores of the lakes. For a small extra charge he supplements the fish stock a little to enhance the fishing experience. In addition, Daniel Hellström arranges clay pigeon shooting and, as a service to his guests, catering from a company in Ludvika.

"I also drive out to ensure that all is well and everybody is satisfied," he explains. "People always wonder which spinner to use, where is it best to stand and at which time of day the fish bite most."

Easy to book a lake

Daniel Hellström has also created a booking system. On his website he has a calender showing the current booking situation for the different lakes. Guests can then book on-line.

"Simple and straight forward," he says. "This eliminates the risk of double booking and enables me to have full control over the situation."

Daniel Hellström hopes that the company customers will return in the future. And that he will be able to offer basic overnight accommodation with sauna and hot tub by one of the lakes.

– "I think I will have to take on some staff also," he says, "and transform the company into a family business. My wife is also keen to play a role."
