This is done using three different regeneration methods: planting, sowing and natural regeneration from seed-trees. We set about 40 million plants and sow on about 5,300 hectares of Sveaskog land annually. This work engages more than 1,000 people.
There are both advantages and disadvantages with the methods we use. Planting is the most expensive but it gives the best results. Natural regeneration is the cheapest but often with poorer results than planting. When it comes to sowing, the quality of cultivated seed has improved considerably in recent years, and technology, methods and knowledge have also developed.
Our goal on reforesting is to increase growth rate and create high quality forest. Seed has the greatest development potential in this regard. Consequently, we are gradually increasing the area that is regenerated through sowing. Under good conditions, sowing results in many more trees per hectare than planting, and it is cheaper.
