Damage to forest caused by the pine weevil amounts to hundreds of millions of kronor. They are found throughout Sweden, but most commonly in Götaland and Svealand (southern and central Sweden). The pine weevil population in the north is increasing as the climate becomes milder.
Pine weevil gnawing kills seedlings
The pine weevil is a serious pest in the forest. They mainly attack the young and vulnerable conifer seedlings and gnaw away the thin bark.
So it is important to protect the plants. They are particularly susceptible up to the end of the second year after planting.
Conniflex is a new, effective, environmentally friendly protection against the pine weevil
Sveaskog's subsidiary, Svenska Skogsplantor, is the first seedling producer in Sweden that can offer forest owners an environmentally friendly and effective protection against the pine weevil. Conniflex is the right choice for you and your forest.
Conniflex, developed by Sveaskog and Svenska Skogsplantor, has been on the market since March 2010.
Insecticides
The substances that are approved for combating pine weevil are Cypermetrin (preparation name Forester), Imidacloprid (preparation name Merit Forest WG) and Lambdacyhalotrin (preparation name Hylobi Forest).
Forester and Forest Hylobi cannot be used after 31 December 2011. Merit Forest WG cannot be used after 31 January 2014. These agents are highly toxic for, among others things, insects and aquatic organisms, and may cause skin irritation and allergy in humans.
KemI is at present evaluating the health impact of these agents and will evaluate the products again at the end of 2011.
