Growth parks

In 2008, Sveaskog decided to assign an area of some 2000 hectares for a so-called growth park. The purpose of this is to examine the effects of intensive forestry on the environment, growth and economy.

DecorpictureSeveral indicators signal a reduction in the amount of wood raw material being produced at the same time as the global demand for it is rising. We are confronted with the challenge of increasing growth while maintaining biological diversity. In order to study the effects of intensive forestry on the environment, growth and economy, Sveaskog has established the growth park, Strömsjöliden, 60 km north of Umeå.

The project is being run in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the area has be assigned for a period of 50 years. As from autumn 2008, the park is included in the MISTRA project “Future Forests”.

A thorough inventory of Strömsjöliden was made during the summer of 2008, using both traditional methods and laser scanning from the air.
