Wind power

Wind turbines on our land deliver more than 8 TWh annually, which is 5 percent of Sweden’s total electricity generated by wind power. Wind power is an important factor in Sweden’s ability to achieve its energy policy goal of a 100 percent renewable electricity system by 2040.

We want to make an active contribution in transitioning Swedish energy production to a higher share of renewable energy. With 14 percent of Sweden’s forest land, Sveaskog can offer many suitable locations for wind power. Against that background, expansion of wind power, through work with developers and energy companies, is a prioritised business area.

To date, around 790 wind turbines have been built on our land under leasehold rights. The turbines have a total installed output of more than 3,020 MW and generate about 8 TWh of electricity annually. Interest in operating wind power projects and leasing land for wind power expansion remains high across the country.

Establishing wind power facilities

Our contracts for rights of use – for design and licence applications – are usually signed for terms of three to five years. Right-of-use fees are based on commercial terms, the size of the area and the suitability of the land for establishing wind power facilities. If it can be established during the right-of-use period that the conditions exist for establishing the facilities, we offer a lease agreement that permits the turbines to be erected and operated over a long period.

Sveaskog’s guidelines regarding the establishment of wind power facilities

Wind turbines are not permitted in nature conservation areas, ecoparks or what are known as non-replaceable conservation forests.

Sveaskog generally takes a restrictive approach to any establishment in ecoparks, in view of the purpose and nature of the parks. Furthermore, in the case of approved and agreed ecoparks, Sveaskog is not permitted to license or transfer any areas for other activities without the written consent of the Swedish Forest Agency.

As far as possible, when locating new wind turbines, types of conservation forests other than those mentioned are to be avoided. Where such conservation forests are nevertheless directly affected, new conservation forests will be selected to replace them in Sveaskog’s reserves.

All planning and establishment of wind power facilities on Sveaskog’s land must observe the guidelines produced by the Swedish FSC® and approved by the international FSC®.

All areas with established wind turbines and areas where surveys and planning concerning possible wind power expansion are in progress are shown in our map tool.

Any questions and comments regarding wind power operations may be addressed to the company’s surveyor Tomas Fransson, or via the Customer Centre. We welcome comments, especially on areas where planning has not yet started and that are marked as “Survey in progress” in the map tool.
